Did you set out to become a manager?
No, I came here because I needed to get a job when I finished school! I started as an administrator and then became a customer services advisor, a team coach, a team leader and now I’m a department manager.
Is that normal?
Yes, there’s lots of opportunity for career progression in the charity. We continue to grow which brings the chance to develop skills in other areas and gain promotion. I really like that and you can see I’m a very good example of it! You don’t have to leave to get great variety. I also get variety from being involved in projects. That’s the good thing about working here - if you want to get involved you can.
Why do you believe StepChange Debt Charity has invested so much in you?
The charity cares a lot about people and wants to retain good staff. But we need new people too, this helps to bring different ideas and perspectives.
What do you like about your workplace?
It’s such a good environment. Our management team are all accessible and friendly and I think that’s what makes it. There’s a lot of togetherness. We’re all here because we want to help people, not just to get paid.
What’s the best thing about your career at StepChange Debt Charity so far?
I’ve been given lots of opportunities - you get a lot back from working hard. I like that.
