Meet the StepChange Debt Charity executive team

Consisting of industry experts in fields including finance, external affairs and business development, our executive team bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to the charity.

Mike O’Connor, Chief Executive


Mike's previous CEO posts include the consumer watchdog, Consumer Focus, the 2012 Olympic Lottery Distributor and the Millennium Commission where he was responsible for a £4bn investment programme.


His early career included the Department of Health, HM Treasury and Cabinet Office.


Mike received a CBE for Public Service in The Queen's Birthday Honours List 2000, and he is a member of the Council of Fellows of Keele University.

Fiona Megaw, Chief Operating Officer


Fiona has responsibility for the management, direction and development of all operational areas. Fiona has worked in senior roles within the Charity for over 10 years and has held her current post since April 2006.


Earlier in her career, Fiona held senior positions at The Burton Group plc and GE Capital - Global Consumer Finance.

Richard Shannon, Director of Finance


Richard provides strategic and financial leadership to ensure that the charity’s financial commitments are met, including the safeguarding of client assets. He’s a Chartered Accountant having qualified at EY in London.


Richard brings a wealth of commercial and regulatory experience gained in financial services at Towergate Insurance and mobile telephony at O2.

Anne Somers, Director of Business Development


Anne has over twenty years’ experience in the financial services sector including senior roles at Aviva Life, Cheshire Building Society, Yorkshire Building Society and Abbey National.
 

Anne has successfully implemented the rebrand of the Charity and developed a marketing programme that has resulted in significant growth in helpline calls, web visits and advice sessions.

Francis McGee, Director of External Affairs


Francis has a career spanning over 20 years in government, regulation and the financial services industry. Prior to joining the Charity he was Head of Policy and External Affairs at the Money Advice Service.


Earlier in his career, he had roles as Head of Corporate Affairs at AEGON UK and Head of Regulation and Strategy at the Association of British Insurers, as well as over a decade in HM Treasury.

Charlie Stewart, Director of Corporate Services

 

Charlie has responsibility for directing transformation and change within the charity, with specific responsibility for digital, IT, people services and programme management. 

 

Charlie started his career in the Royal Air Force before holding senior leadership positions in both the private and public sector. Before joining StepChange Debt Charity he was Assistant Chief Executive at a unitary city council.

Richard McKenzie, Director of Risk and Compliance

 

Richard is responsible for the delivery and development of the Charity’s risk and compliance framework and in achieving and maintaining its fully authorised status with the Financial Conduct Authority. Richard is also a Chartered Certified Accountant having qualified with Deloitte in Leeds. 

 

Richard brings a wealth of financial services experience gained across a variety of industry sectors and business, including Aviva, Cattles and more recently Ryan Direct Group.

 


 

 

Action Plan on Problem Debt

The consequences of debt - lost jobs, broken relationships, mental health and support needs - leads to social costs of £8.3 billion.

The Government has an opportunity to offer better help for people in debt, allowing them to get back on their feet and contributing to the economy again.

We want to see the Government rise to this challenge by committing to a Debt Action Plan.
