Can you tell us a bit about your role.
I’m delighted to be here at StepChange Debt Charity. When I started, mine was a brand new role and there continues to be lots of scope to develop some really exciting partnerships. I work with a variety of external partners, as well as colleagues across the charity, to make this happen.
We’re already identifying the key themes we want to focus on next year and the partners we want to work with, so we can reach even more people who are struggling with problem debt and help them to find the right solution.
What’s your background?
I’ve had the chance to work for some really exciting and varied organisations throughout my career so far. Having started my working life with accountancy firm PwC, I soon realised that life as an accountant wasn’t for me. Since then I have held roles involving change leadership, business improvement and new service development in a variety of sectors, including private companies, charities and the public sector.
I have held senior business development roles, as Head of Strategy and Development at Business Link Yorkshire, and more recently as Director of Strategic Partnerships and Development for the National Day Nurseries Association.
What would you say are the key goals of your team?
The purpose of my team is to develop extensive relationships with other organisations, which will enable us to bring greater help and support to people with problem debt.
We work closely with partner organisations to reach more people, at an earlier stage. We build effective and seamless referral processes and implement them with compassion and understanding. We want to improve understanding of the link between debt and other factors that impact on the emotional, mental and physical wellbeing of our clients. And we also refer clients, wherever appropriate, to trusted partners, so that they can access additional help and support.
Where would you like StepChange partnerships to be in 5 years?
Our vision at StepChange Debt Charity is of a society free from problem debt. We can’t make this happen by working alone.
Debt is an emotional as well as a financial problem, which sits at the heart of many issues faced by individuals, families and communities. By building purposeful relationships with well-known and trusted third parties, we want to reach out to everyone who is struggling with problem debt and work together to transform their lives.
What excites you most about working for StepChange Debt Charity?
StepChange Debt Charity is a fantastic organisation with an ambitious vision. We have a team of over 1,000 highly dedicated and experienced professionals, who know all there is to know about debt.
Our services have been built and developed over 20 years, with the express purpose of supporting people – in all walks of life - who struggle with problem debt. The charity makes a huge difference to people’s lives and I feel very privileged to work here.
