Credit card debt

Writing off credit card debt. What are my options?

Some organisations claim to be able to write off your credit card debt for you. Be careful - these claims are misleading and could cost you even more money.

Beware of any firms claiming to be able to write off your credit card debt by using a legal loophole, and be particularly wary of anyone asking for upfront fees to do the job.

What does 'writing off' debts mean?

If you're struggling to pay your credit card debts, you may be looking for options to help you write them off, which usually refers to insolvency solutions such as:

England, Wales and Northern Ireland

Scotland

While these insolvency measures will write off all, or some of your debts they may not be suitable for everyone.

There are drawbacks too – some insolvency measures require fees and there’s a risk of losing assets such as your house or car. All insolvency measures will have a serious effect on your credit file.

This is why it's important to get the right advice to when dealing with your debts, as not all solutions involve insolvency or writing off your debts.
