Sue Murdoch joins StepChange to lead people and culture as charity begins new strategic chapter

2 July 2025

StepChange Debt Charity has appointed Sue Murdoch as its new Chief People Officer, signalling a bold commitment to shaping the culture, capabilities and leadership needed to deliver its ambitious new 2025–2030 strategy. Sue formally joined the charity in July.

Bringing over 25 years of experience across telecoms, professional services, financial services, and banking, Sue has held senior leadership roles spanning every aspect of the people agenda—including transformation, organisation development and organisation design, recruitment, reward, talent to and inclusion. Most recently, she served as Chief People Officer at two start-up Banks, leading the build and regulatory approval of the people agenda.

Her appointment comes at a defining moment for the charity, as StepChange embarks on a new chapter focused on long-term impact and sustainability. Sue will play a critical role in shaping the people and culture foundations that underpin that journey.

Commenting on the appointment, StepChange CEO Vikki Brownridge, said:

"Our people are our most valuable asset, and Sue’s appointment comes at a pivotal moment as we begin to deliver our new strategy. Her leadership will be central to embedding the culture, skills and mindset we need to thrive through a period of significant change. We’re absolutely delighted to have her on board."

Sue Murdoch said:

"I’m proud to be joining StepChange at such a critical point in its journey. The charity plays a vital role in supporting people in financial difficulty, and I’m excited to help shape the culture and environment that enables our colleagues to deliver real and lasting impact. I look forward to working with teams across the charity to help build a confident, inclusive, and future-focused organisation."
