This latest report provides insight into the demographic and debt information of new clients who first received debt advice in May 2026. It also includes the latest insights on our website traffic trends
Our key findings from May 2026:
- The number of clients completing debt advice in May 2026 is 14,717. This is 3% lower than March 2026 (15,144), but 12% higher than May 2025 (13,171)
- Credit card debt remains the most common unsecured debt type in May 2026, held by nearly three in four clients (73%). This is two percentage points higher than April 2026 (71%) and six percentage points higher than May 2025 (67%)
- Personal loan debts were held by over one in two (54%) clients in May 2026. This is one percentage point higher than April 2026 (53%), and seven percentage points higher than May 2025 (47%)
- The proportion of clients responsible for energy bills and in arrears continues to fall in May 2026. Electricity (May 2025 = 30%, May 2026 = 25%) and gas arrears (May 2025 = 22%, May 2026 = 17%) have both fallen by five percentage points year-on-year
- In May 2026, the proportion of clients in a negative budget stands at one in four (26%), down four percentage points versus May 2025 (30%)
- The proportion of clients who are ‘single with no children’ has increased in May 2026 (43%). This is two percentage points higher than April 2026 and May 2025 (both 41%)
