Payday loans. Make your voice heard.

Right now, millions of people across the UK are struggling with payday loan debt. We think that payday loans need reform.

Thousands of you responded to our call to action to ask MPs to vote for change. Together, our efforts are making a real difference. The Government is finally clamping down on the dangers posed by payday lenders - this is action that will change things for good.

But new controls won't come in until April 2014 and there's no sign that problems are about to go away. So it was frustrating to see progress on the High Cost Credit Bill postponed on 12 July - despite strong support from MPs attending the debate.

Here at StepChange Debt Charity we're all too aware of the dangers of payday loans. That's why we're continuing to campaign for change. But we need your help to keep the momentum going ahead of the next debate in September.

Please ask your local MP to change the way payday lenders operate. Take action today and ask your MP to support payday loan reform.

What should you say to your MP?

Tell them about your own experience of payday loans, if any. Have you taken out a payday loan? Did you feel pressured to extend the loan? If you had problems repaying the loan, were you treated fairly?

Or you could use some of the ideas below:

  • Millions of borrowers are struggling with payday loan debts because of serious failings by lenders – In 2012, StepChange Debt Charity helped 36,413 people deal with payday loan problems, more than twice as many as in 2011. Problems in the market are now so deep-rooted that last year, 2.7 million loans were made to people who couldn’t afford to pay back on time.
  • Rollover loans are often causing debts to spiral – One rollover is all it takes to double the cost of a payday loan. But many borrowers are pressured to renew loans – or take out more – when what they really need is help to manage their finances.
  • Payday loan borrowers are often in severe payment difficulties – Last year, people seeking help from StepChange Debt Charity owed on average £1,657 on payday loans. There need to be strict new rules to stop loans from spiralling so badly.

Here are four more things you can do to help

  1. Share your experience: you can do this anonymously in the 'Have you got any payday loan stories?' box on our payday loans page.
  2. Promote free debt and money advice: if you're worried about payday loan debts - or you think someone you care about is struggling - use our online advice tool Debt Remedy.
  3. If you need a loan, look up your local credit union instead: credit unions are likely to be a far cheaper option than payday loans. You can search for your local credit union on the Association of British Credit Unions website.
  4. Sign up to email updates to keep informed about the next steps in our campaign: click on the button at the top right of this page to subscribe to our payday loans campaign email. Keep up to date with the latest on the campaign and how you can get involved.
