Sharon Bell, Head of StepChange Scotland:

“I’m so proud that StepChange Scotland has been supporting people in this country for 30 years. At the same time, I'm daunted to see that more people than ever need our help. While the financial challenges people face have changed over time, one thing remains the same: we are united as a charity in our common goal of supporting people in Scotland with problem debt.”

Sharon Bell, Head of StepChange Scotland

How we are helping people in Scotland

At StepChange Scotland, we have been helping Scottish people with their debts for 30 years.

We offer a range of tools, resources, and solutions for people in Scotland with money worries.

Our dedicated Welfare Benefits team can support with this. Since 2024, they have helped people across Scotland access £2,815,248 in benefits and grants. They work with other charities such as Macmillan and the Royal Society for the Protection of Women in Scotland, and can support with accessing food, utility help and hardship funds.

Campaigning for change in Scotland

We are committed to driving change through reducing financial harm for people across Scotland.

Every year, we conduct our 'Scotland In The Red' report to look closely at how debt and finances affect people throughout the country. Our 2025 report showed some key changes, including an increase in problem debt among clients under 40 and in full time work, and a steep increase in energy debt.

As the May Scottish elections get closer, we are lobbying for all political parties to prioritise financial security. Some of our key focuses are giving people room to repay council tax and the energy debt crisis. You can read our manifesto asks here.

What our clients say about us

speech bubbles

Kay on Trustpilot says:

"StepChange Scotland helped me to set up a Debt Payment Plan, to consolidate all of my monthly payments into one affordable monthly payment. Thanks to Mollie for her direct help. And the initial team for being caring and understanding to my situation."

Ellie on Trustpilot says:

"Honestly, the process may take some time, but I imagine if I done all of this myself it would have taken much longer! My case manager was April who was fantastic but everyone I spoke to there has been kind and helpful. My DPP has been accepted today and I'm finally feeling some relief from my debt. Thank you to everyone :)"

Celebrating our 30th birthday in our Glasgow office

Our Glasgow office hosted some birthday celebrations last month in honour of reaching the big 30!

To mark the occasion, some of our advisors have kindly shared their stories about their experience working for StepChange Scotland.

Terry Wallace, debt advisor

Terry Wallace, debt advisor, says:

I joined StepChange Scotland in 2023 as a Debt Advisor, and from my very first day it has been a genuinely positive experience. The role has been incredibly rewarding, both in terms of making a meaningful difference in clients’ lives and over time, I’ve seen my confidence grow significantly. I have since progressed into handling live chats and, more recently, supporting new starters as they settle into their roles. Looking back, I’m proud of how far I’ve come. I’m grateful not only to StepChange for the opportunities I’ve had, but also to my Team Leader, Sue, whose support has played a key part in my development.

Darren Farrand, debt advice team leader

Darren Farrand, debt advice team leader, says:

I joined the Glasgow office in 2019, and from day one, I found it to be an incredibly rewarding experience. The role allowed me to make a genuine difference in people’s lives and develop both professionally and personally. I progressed into my current position as a Team Leader, where I have the privilege of coaching and supporting a dedicated team of Debt Advisors who go above and beyond for our clients every day. I’m very proud to be part of StepChange and the positive impact we make together.
