This latest report provides insight into the demographic and debt information of new clients who first received debt advice in September 2025. It also includes the latest insights on our website traffic trends.

Our key findings from September 2025:

  • A 'lack of control over finances' remains as the most selected main reason for debt in September 2025 (18%), closely followed by a 'cost of living increase' (17%). These reasons for debt were also most common in September 2024
  • The proportion of clients in debt due to personal loans has increased by three percentage points, from 47% in September 2024, to 50% in September 2025
  • In September 2025, nearly half of clients responsible for paying dual fuel reported arrears (46%) with this bill type. This is two percentage points higher than August 2025 (44%). Similarly, the percentage of clients with electricity arrears rose from 26% in August 2025 to 29% in September 2025
  • Average household bill arrears were £4,447 in September 2025; this is 10% higher than the £4,059 average arrears reported in September 2024
  • Three in five (60%) clients are in employment as of September 2025. This is a fall of two percentage points from August 2025 (62%)
