StepChange Debt Charity responds to DCMS nuisance calls consultation

27 October, 2014

Following the Department for Culture Media and Sport’s (DCMS) announcement that it would consult on lowering the threshold for enforcement for nuisance calls and texts, Francis McGee, external affairs director of StepChange Debt Charity, said:

“Making it easier for regulators to crack down on companies making nuisance calls and texts is welcome news for the 3.2 million Brits who have been left afraid to answer the phone as a result of these types of communications.”

“Nuisance calls and texts are more than just an everyday annoyance and have the ability to cause serious harm, especially to those in financial distress who are often bombarded with offers for high-cost credit. Ensuring that consumers get the protections they need will require a broad range of additional measures, including a ban on the unsolicited real-time promotion of high-cost credit and actions to give people better control of their personal data”.
