Former StepChange Debt Charity Chief Executive wins prestigious industry award

9 May, 2014

Gordon Bell, who stepped down as StepChange Debt Charity’s Chief Executive last year, has been presented with the Martin Williams Award for Contribution to the Credit Industry, at the Credit Today Awards 2014 on May 8th.

Current Chief Executive Mike O’Connor said:

“Everyone at StepChange Debt Charity is delighted that Gordon’s achievements have been recognised by this prestigious award.  It is justly deserved.

“In his 14 years at the helm, Gordon grew this organisation beyond recognition to become the UK’s leading debt charity. When he was appointed, the charity employed just 65 people – we now have over 1,000 staff dedicated to helping those who need free, effective debt advice.

“Gordon was one of the first people in the industry to recognise the potential offered by online technology to help more people in debt, and this innovative thinking continues to reap benefits for both the charity and the people we help.

“Gordon led the charity’s successful rebranding from the Consumer Credit Counselling Service to StepChange Debt Charity in 2012 and due to the foundations he laid the organisation has gone from strength to strength.”

The Martin Williams Award for Contribution to the Credit Industry

Winners are nominated by their peers from the wider credit industry and the award recognises those for service and achievements that go beyond the call of duty; further improving good working practices in the industry; promoting a cause within the credit industry; and encouraging the industry to work together beyond the bounds of the organisation they work for.
